The days are getting shorter and colder. Our fresh organic ginger and turmeric arrived just in time for the start of autumn. What better time for us to share a recipe that will strengthen your immune system: golden milk!
Often known as "turmeric latte", golden milk has its origins in Ayurvedic cuisine. “Haldi Doodh” is a milk mixed with turmeric that is supposed to strengthen the immune system and have anti-inflammatory properties. In recent years, the recipe has been enhanced with many delicious spices and found its way into many cafés. In addition to ginger, cinnamon and cardamom, it’s a good idea to add some pepper, as the piperine it contains allows our body to better metabolize the curcumin.
There are two ways to prepare it.
Method #1: Put all the ingredients except the sugar in a saucepan and bring the mixture to the boil. Reduce the heat and let the milk gently simmer for 10 minutes. Then, sweeten the milk to taste and pour it into two cups through a sieve. Add frothed milk, cinnamon or turmeric powder as desired.
Method #2: Peel the roots, use water instead of milk and add 30 g of crushed cashews to the pot. Follow the same steps as for Method #1, at the end remove the cinnamon stick (if used) and put the mixture in a blender. Mix the spiced tea along with the cashews to obtain a creamy hot drink that is significantly spicier than Method #1, as it contains the whole roots. Depending on how powerful your blender is, you can serve the golden milk directly or once again pour it through a sieve.
Note: Be careful with the turmeric root, as it can leave stubborn stains e.g. on your countertop. If something goes wrong, the stains are best removed with baking soda. Kitchen gloves help prevent staining your hands.
For our golden milk, we prefer to use almond or cashew milk, as these accentuate rather than overpower the flavour of the spices. If you use our crushed cashews, you can even make your turmeric drink without any milk from the supermarket. Try it out and let us know how you liked it. Smallholders and local producers harvest and refine products of extraordinary quality worldwide. But for many of these producers there is no adequate or stable market. You can buy directly from these producers via the Access to Market Platform and help them to participate in the market. The principle behind this is crowd ordering – a new trade model whereby a number of consumers order a product together so as to achieve a minimum order quantity. We at gebana support the producers with our know-how, and organise the logistics.
Enable someone to make their first export with your order. Please note: Unexpected events often lead to delays, and you may find that the quality is not yet perfect. For this reason, your feedback is absolutely essential. The export experience and your feedback are important steps for the producers towards accessing the market. As a customer, you are witness to the whole process, playing your part in pioneering work.
You can order from these producers simply and directly. You receive your product as soon as the minimum order quantity has been reached and the products are ready. The risk for you is minimal, since the producers already have a product that is ready for market. This sales channel is beneficial to both the producers and the consumers, since it cuts out the middle man.
Be part of the development of supply chains and support innovation! Some of the ways you can do this include testing new products, giving feedback, or financially supporting the producers in their next steps. In doing so, you will be able to see for yourself how the products and supply chains develop.
This is where you can see all the completed projects on the Access to Market Platform at a glance. You can find out where products are now available from or whether the producers are still seeking a trade partner.
